Theres a chance of snow showers tomorrow (Wed.) and precipitation at the end of week again. The other area smaller tribs have medium flows and slightly stained water color. Warm temps are forecast today and tomorrow and seasonable thru the beginning part of the weekend. Flows in the Oak are staying high with some stubborn overflow water that should be receding by about today leaving just the full cranking turbine flows. High winds and advisory is likely for something like Fri/Sat/Sun. Since then, the Douglaston Salmon Run has reported salmon entering the river on a consistent basis. The area received a few inches of wet snow and sleet thru the end of the past week. POINT BREEZE WEATHER Next chance at snow for area wide is for the beginning part of next week. First, take advantage of mature king, coho salmon and brown trouts urge to seek the river waters around the piers at the Point Breeze pier, channel, and bay casting with brightly colored spoons is the ticket, especially predawn and at sunset. Upstream action so far mainly for a few fish at the dam. Thats on the ground now and will make for the next spate of water when that melts. Those fish are there somewhere and its likely not in the same old downstream water but probably upstream nearer where Kings are concentrated. Water temps are moving thru the mid and into the high 30s F and look for 40F ish+ as the weather warms. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. It was all spoon and meat bite Saturday. As the cooler weather continues, expect to see a large influx of both steelhead and brown trout moving up stream to feed on the remaining salmon eggs. The area smaller trib flows bumped up slightly while flows in the Oak have kept humming along at about slightly high and slightly stained. For now flows in the Oak are moderate or optimistically almost medium and mostly clear. Other area smaller tribs like Johnson and Marsh have lower flows so look for scattered numbers of upstream fish. The derby runs until Sept 6 and the awards ceremony held at Captain Jacks in Sodus Point (arrive by 3 PM). Looking out across the water and spotting fish def not as easy as it would be if flows were lower and clearer. Considering that January is usually a bit of an in-between time frame after the fall salmon/brown trout action and before spring steelhead, the few guys out taking advantage of the weather and flows are doing pretty good. New migrations of fresh fish could come anytime during this part of the season with good flows or especially with any bump up in trib flows. We received 10,000 steelhead and 113,500 salmon from the DEC today as part of the Pen Rearing Project to keep the lake stocked. So far thru today the heavier rains have been south of here and the trend looks like the Oak is on the rise while the smaller tribs are barely dropping or holding steady. Spoons chipped in but flasher/fly and meat rigs were good. There would have been a similar few day high/stained fishable water window in the smaller area tribs too. Without any persistent cold or snow or ice hanging in, these precipitation events are going to keep water color on the stained side.
